Moral Hazard, Incentive Contracts and Risk: Evidence from Procurement

Deadlines and penalties are widely used to incentivize effort. We model how these incentive contracts affect the work rate and time taken in a procurement setting, characterizing the efficient contract design. Using new micro-level data on Minnesota highway construction contracts that includes day-by-day information on work plans, hours actually worked and delays, we find evidence of moral haza...

Essays on Incentive Contracts under Moral Hazard and Non-Verifiable Performance

This thesis consists of four self-contained essays that compare real-world incentive schemes used to mitigate moral hazard problems under non-verifiable performance. The first essay contrasts the impact of the precision of performance measurement on wage costs in Uand J-type tournaments. In U-type tournaments prizes are fixed. In J-type tournaments only an overall wage sum is specified. The pri...

Incentive Contracts in a Cournot Duopoly

We discuss how owners can use incentive contracts to guide a manager in a duopoly. We show how owners can use the terms of the contract as a strategic lever and that asymmetric information increases the advantage to the firm with the lower marginal cost. The need for a contract depends on the source of asymmetric information and, using this insight, we show why it is important to distinguish th...

Labor-Market Implications of Contracts Under Moral Hazard

The optimal contract under moral hazard is embedded in a standard MortensenPissarides matching model. Under standard assumptions, we show that when firms cannot perfectly observe workers’ productivity the optimal contract can take the form of a debt contract exhibiting almost a fixed wage along the business cycle. When this contract is embedded in the standard matching model, the calibrated mod...

On moral hazard and nonexclusive contracts

We study an economy where intermediaries compete over contracts in a nonexclusive insurance market affected by moral hazard. Our setting is the same as that developed in Bisin and Guaitoli [2004]. The present note provides a counterexample to the set of necessary conditions for high effort equilibria developed in Bisin and Guaitoli [2004] and suggests an alternative equilibrium characterization.
